A massive illustrator turning art into a gift for nature lovers

It may still be summer, but Alyssa Waters is in full holiday production mode at Art by Alyssa in Beverly, Massachusetts. When NewsCenter 5 recently visited Waters at her storefront/factory on Cabot Street, she was already hand-crafting her limited-edition 2022 Christmas ornaments that were inspired by one of her own hand-painted pieces of art. “I like to draw things that make me happy, and I think I’m lucky that it makes other people happy,” Waters said. By nature Waters is quite a happy person and in a way her ability to capture nature in oil paintings has made her quite a happy and successful entrepreneur. “My paintings are unique in that the painting wraps around the edges so you don’t have to put in frame them,” she said. A few years after graduating from art school with a degree in illustration, Waters decided to create a business putting her artwork on gift products. From stoves to key chains and from calendars to colorful cuff bracelets, her art has found a home in homes all over the world — including as far away as Japan. “Anything that I could print from this printer and somehow attach it to a product that I could sell, I did, and it worked,” Waters said. that she paints a variety of subjects and landscapes, Waters said the beauty of birds is partly responsible for her business taking off. “People love birds, so I probably wouldn’t be where I am if I hadn’t I had drawn birds. But they are fun,” she said. Waters said September through January used to be the sweet spot for her gift business, but now she’s experiencing year-round success after nearly a decade. She admitted that she’s excited for the Christmas season, but she’s not so sure if she’s ready for it. Her husband, Andrew Bablo, is a talented artist in his own right. The founder of Steez Design, Bablo’s work can be found all over the North Shore. He has painted murals at Finz Restaurant in Salem, True North Ale Company in Ipswich, and Cityside Diner in Beverly, just to name a few.
