Albany County’s MVP Arena $30M Renovation at Start of Pandemic Paying Big Dividends in 2022 as World Returns to Live Entertainment

ALBANY, NY-(BUSINESS WIRE) – A recent record-breaking sell-out show for country icon Luke Combs, MVP’s first stage appearance this fall showed how – as the world emerges from the pandemic – MVP Arena successfully leveraged a timely investment of $30 million to produce the most successful year in its 32-year history.

This is a remarkable turn of events.

Ahead of concerts earlier this year by John Mayer, Journey and Sebastian Maniscalco, and in preparation for other upcoming performances by Roger Waters, Cody Johnson, My Chemical Romance and Luke Combs, MVP Arena has become a major partner for the naming rights of this, which used to be the Times Union Center. Additionally, three athletic recruits return amid continued dramatic physical improvements at the Albany County position.

Highlights of the $30 million renovation, which was completed just before the pandemic, include closing the front atrium to create a temperature-controlled space for customers to enter and exit; closing the rear entrance, allowing patrons to walk from the arena parking garage into a covered, temperature-controlled space; and two massive spectacular 70” LED video screens mounted on the outside of the building.

The concourse received a complete facelift with a complete transformation of concession stands and restrooms, renovations to all corporate suites and sports bars, and a completely fresh green look throughout.

An additional $5.2 million in new capital investment will include spectacular new 360-degree LED strips on the arena’s inner bowl; new video board; new outdoor marquee; and back of house, state-of-the-art amenities for sportsmen and entertainers visiting Albany. All improvements are expected to be completed by September.

“Five years and $30 million later, I’m proud to say the improvements we made back then brought the county-owned facility to 21St century. It is where countless memories have been made with family and friends for more than three decades, and our residents deserve entertainment experiences like no other,” said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy.

“We continue to look for new ways to improve with this latest round of renovations at MVP Arena. Between a new video board, outdoor marquee, locker room hallway and more, we are making this an even better facility for fans, athletes and entertainers and continue to improve the arena experience.”

Albany County’s commitment to the arena’s success and partnership with ASM Global was solidified with the Legislature’s approval of a two-year contract extension between the two parties.

“We cannot thank our patrons, sponsors and condo owners enough for their patronage of MVP. It is only with their support and Albany County’s investment in this venue that we can continue to attract the best musical artists, premier sports and all shows in between to appeal to a wide variety of consumers,” said Bob Belber, ASM Global General Manager , MVP Arena.

Prior to the pandemic, MVP Arena had its second-most profitable year in arena history; 2019 featured 11 sold-out concerts, the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Regionals and the AFL’s Arenabowl.
