APG technology equips Jabil’s headquarters with best-in-class space collaboration technology

Jabil is a well-known name in modern technological solutions, global production and supply chain management. It has more than 260,000 employees in 100 locations in 30 countries. Jabil has chosen St. Petersburg, Florida as the location of its new world headquarters. The vision was to unite employees in a modern, environmentally friendly and highly connected campus. However, the building needed to have attractiveness and technology to facilitate collaboration between teams in Florida and around the world.

Packed with amenities

At 175,000 square feet, this four-story building includes office space, conference rooms, collaboration rooms and customer engagement spaces. Facilities include a café, a specialized information desk and a modern fitness center.

Based in Clearwater, Florida, APG technology was included by the design team as a technology consultant for the project. Eventually, the company was selected as an audiovisual integrator, working in partnership with Gensler Architects and Skanska USA. The company’s task was monumental: conceptualizing, designing, installing and integrating technology for such a large and diverse company as Jabil.

Jabil wanted state-of-the-art technology, so it used its existing partnership with Crestron to ensure technological homogeneity. APG Technology works closely with Crestron to design any collaboration space. He chose the Crestron Flex series for Microsoft Teams for all collaboration spaces and the Crestron NVX in conjunction with the Urest Engines Crestron Flex series in the boardroom and conference center to allow the switching capability needed to hold multiple meetings with multiple sources and displays.

To ensure user convenience, each touch panel looked the same, regardless of the technology behind each room. Standardization was a key requirement. The customer wanted each room to feel and work the same way, thus probably minimizing IT support requests.

How the relationship grows between APG Technology and Jabil

Let’s explore how APG Technology and Jabil came together to create such an impressive environment. Jabil contacted APG Technology in late 2017 to design technology systems for its new 40,000-square-foot innovation center, a building dedicated to research and development. Scott Renner oversees the design of all technology systems, including structured cabling, security and audiovisual technology. Jabil signed the contract in February 2018.

After observing APG Technology’s zeal in dealing with the Innovation Center, Jabil contacted the company again to continue the design of the new plant. The end product is the culmination of years of effort and represents APG’s passion for perfection. The company’s reach was not limited to a standard structured cabling system or a basic conference room projection screen; rather, it included some of the most advanced, innovative, and sophisticated systems in the industry.

APG Technology’s partnership with Jabil continues today, after the culmination of the headquarters building. The company has actually been selected to complete the design and integration of the upcoming renovation of the Jabil MLK building, which is expected to be completed in 2023.

Understanding the specifics

It is clear that this organizational partnership works on all cylinders, so let’s dig a little deeper into the global headquarters that serves Jabil so well. The project includes multiple rooms with AV integration, including small, medium and large conference rooms; four-way separable conference center; guarded executive meeting room; fitness center; signs for cafes; many meeting rooms; and a central security service.

For audio and video distribution within the conference center, the Crestron NVX server system and Biamp DSP allow each input to be routed to each output. APG technology provides a high-quality sound system, including ceiling speakers, wireless microphones, Crestron UC Engines and dense door microphones. The conference rooms consisted of Crestron UC Engines kits for conferences and team presentations with Samsung displays and HDMI inputs for laptops.

The programming of the executive meeting room allows the system to be completely switched off and to reflect red light on the panel by selecting a security button on the touch panel. Two HDMI inputs are located on the table to allow direct connection to the dual 2 × 2 55-inch video walls. Input devices also include Apple TV, AirMedia for wireless collaboration and IPTV tuner.

The fitness studio consists of Samsung’s 55-inch displays with IPTV, Apple TV and a separate distributed classroom audio system with a wall-mounted docking station and Bluetooth inputs. The cafe consists of seven 43-inch Samsung displays with digital menus and a background music system with hanging speakers. The new IPTV exchange was provided with an optical loop connecting the buildings on site, which would allow it to accommodate IPTV in neighboring buildings. some 99 10-inch Crestron room planning touch panels were installed in each conference space.

A complete sound masking system consists of 355 hanging Lencore speakers, 58 ceiling speakers, six OP processor stands and one sound masking head at levels 2, 3 and 4.

Refraction removal

Two main spaces in the new facility – the conference center and the executive director’s meeting room – had some refractions that needed to be removed. The touch panel of the conference center did not allow changing the main part of the UC Engine. The client asked to put the room in many combined states: 4 × 4, 2 × 2, 3 × 1 and all combined. Meetings were held with IT staff to determine the best way to achieve this goal and meet customer needs.

APG Technology’s solution for easy user integration was to monitor NVX’s HDMI input, which is connected to the UC Engine output. When the UC Engine wakes up, video sync is detected and the entire system turns on. The integrator created a home page that appears after selecting the room control button and added a room combination mode.

In the boardroom, the client didn’t want the video conferencing cameras to wake up and start sharing video until the time came. This also had to be done in the conference center.
APG Technology met with IT staff to offer customized UI solutions. In this way, Jabil can turn the cameras on and off, turning them off by default when the meeting starts.

Once the meeting begins, the client can navigate to the camera controls page and turn them on when the time is right to see the far end. The touchpad will return to the Teams page by default after 60 seconds after it has not been used; this is managed by Microsoft and Crestron and cannot be undone.

For security, a privacy dimming light was implemented using a custom LED light and a Crestron wireless lamp controller. The control system monitors the status of the DSP attenuation module. When it is muted, the system sends a command to turn on the light to turn off privacy and to turn the TC2 lights on red. When on, the privacy indicator turns off and the TC2 light turns green.

Excited customer

Jabil is absolutely excited about the result of the project. Even after the project is completed, the customer says, APG is working hard with the Jabil team to ensure that all new systems meet the demanding requirements of many different users of the facility.

Everyone on the APG team – from management to engineers to on-site staff – has shown a personal interest in ensuring the smooth operation of the new facility. It is equally important that the integrator’s staff navigates in unprecedented times in a global pandemic, showing that the team is adaptable and committed to the success of the project.
