Can we ever eradicate the flu?

For many people, getting the flu might not seem like such a big deal—you might feel sick, miss a few days of work or school, and then it’s back to normal. But this common disease causes tens of thousands of hospitalizations and deaths each year: between 2010 and 2020, up to 342,000 people died from flu in the US, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (opens in new tab) (CDC). During three of the four influenza pandemics of the past two centuries, incl Influenza Pandemic of 1918that number jumped into the millions worldwide.

Ending this disease would prevent countless deaths. But is it possible to eradicate the flu?
