Daniel Ricciardo will remain in Formula 1 as a reserve driver next season

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said “great character” Daniel Ricciardo is in talks with both his team and Red Bull about a reserve driver role in 2023.

Ricciardo has no place for next season, with the Australian set to leave McLaren after his contract was terminated a year earlier following a disappointing second campaign with the British team.

Ricciardo has been linked with several places with teams expected to be at the back of the grid, but hinted that he prefers the prospect of joining a favorite as a reserve driver, with a view to a return to a strong car in 2024.

“I think Daniel is talking to a few teams about a potential role, also Red Bull,” Wolff said when asked about Ricciardo ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix.

“For us, we like him a lot, he’s a great character, but we’re not in a position yet as to who our third pilot will be.”

The 33-year-old has endured a torrid period since leaving Red Bull in 2018, where he took seven of his eight career wins in five years with the team.

He spent two largely unsuccessful seasons with Renault before moving to McLaren, where he consistently outperformed team-mate Lando Norris, despite taking the team’s only win since 2012 at last year’s Italian Grand Prix.

While his stock as a driver has undoubtedly dipped at McLaren, Ricciardo’s flamboyant personality has established him as one of the sport’s most popular personalities, increasing his value as a fallback option for potential suitors.

Asked what Ricciardo could bring to Mercedes, Wolff said: “Personality, and he’s been here for a long time.

“He knows these cars inside out, so that can be really beneficial.

“But I don’t want to spread any rumors because we haven’t decided.

Ricciardo reminded of his talent when he secured a brilliant seventh place in Mexico despite receiving a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda.

Speaking of Sky Sports F1 after the race, he reiterated his expectation that he would not be available next season.

“I can say with confidence that I will not be on the grid behind the wheel [next year]Ricciardo said.

“But I still want to be in the sport and I want to work with a team that still has the ambition to be back on the grid in 2024.

“I feel a bit of time away from the racing scene will do me good and then try to build something back up for 2024.”

“I’m not done, but it’s going to look a little different.”
