Guangxi continues to build an ASEAN Science and Technology Innovation and Cooperation Zone

NANING, China, Oct. 25, 2022 /Xinhua-AsiaNet/– The 10th China-ASEAN Technology Transfer and Co-Innovation Forum, an important high-level forum under the China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO), was held recently in Nanning, Guangxi. Coinciding with the first year of the China-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the event announces the launch of a special China-ASEAN technology transfer action, featuring 1,000 advanced and applicable technologies in sustainable fields selected nationwide and uniformly introduced in ASEAN countries. The China-ASEAN Technology Transfer Alliance – the first technology transfer cooperation mechanism for ASEAN in China – has been formally established, which will cooperate with China’s provincial and municipal innovation institutions with strong scientific and technological innovation capabilities and pooled resources for more effectively meeting the innovation needs of ASEAN countries. The opening ceremony of the China-ASEAN Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and the China-ASEAN Innovation and Entrepreneurship Camp is unveiled at the same time, aiming to make the competition the most influential and the most participatory with the highest quality of projects among other competitions for ASEAN Innovation and Entrepreneurship as well as an open platform for sharing resources, increasing value and demonstrating strength.

In the past few years, Guangxi has given full play to its role as an important gateway for China’s opening up and cooperation with ASEAN members, including, for example, always taking ASEAN as the priority direction of overseas scientific and technological cooperation, positively building a Science and Technology Area ASEAN-oriented innovation and cooperation, and comprehensive implementation of the China-ASEAN Science and Technology Partnership Program and the Belt and Road Science and Technology Innovation Action Plan. The province has carried out fruitful exchange and cooperation activities with ASEAN member countries in various fields, such as science and technology and humanity exchange, joint construction of laboratories and science and technology parks, technology transfer and innovation and entrepreneurship.

Currently, Guangxi has established bilateral government technology transfer mechanisms with nine ASEAN countries (including Thailand and Cambodia), formed joint technology transfer working groups with seven ASEAN members, and built a China-ASEAN technology transfer cooperation network of more than 2,600 members covering 10 ASEAN countries and some Belt and Road countries, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Meanwhile, with the support of the China-ASEAN Technology Transfer Center and the China-ASEAN Technology Transfer and Co-Innovation Forum, Guangxi continued to operate the “Guangxi Program for Talented Young Scientists of ASEAN” and attracted a group of scientists and technicians from member countries of ASEAN. For example, BGI is building a “Huo Yan” laboratory for Brunei to perform nucleic acid testing; China-ASEAN Information Harbor becomes Indonesia’s partner for smart city solutions. Both are examples of the deep and extensive cooperation in science and technology between China and ASEAN.

As of May 2022, Guangxi has organized more than 140 ASEAN science and technology innovation and technology transfer activities at home and abroad, nearly one-third of which have been held in ASEAN countries, covering more than 7,800 projects serving over 9,900 enterprises and supporting the conclusion of 653 cooperation agreements that promoted the implementation of modern agriculture and other advanced and applicable technological achievements in ASEAN member states.
