Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in signing PSV midfielder Ibrahim Sangare this summer.
Sangare is believed to have a € 35 million (£ 29.9 million) release clause in his contract and is also linked to Liverpool and Newcastle in the Dutch media.
A source close to the 24-year-old said the player is set to move to England and is confident he will be a Premier League player next season.
Sangare joined PSV Toulouse in September 2020 and has three years left on his contract with the Eredivisie club.
The Ivory Coast national team was regular for PSV last season, playing 49 times in all competitions, as Roger Schmidt’s team won the Dutch Cup, finished second to Eric ten Haag in the league after Ajax and reached the quarterfinals. – the finals of the Conference League Europe.
Sangare spent most of the season playing as a defensive midfielder in the Schmid 4-3-3 formation, with the chart below showing how he excelled in a number of key indicators.
Chelsea looking at Kante’s cover?
Chelsea can return to the transfer market after sanctions imposed on the club by the UK government were lifted when a consortium led by Todd Boelli completed the takeover of the club by Roman Abramovich last month.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel said after the win against Watford on the last day of the Premier League season that his team will need to be “recreated” this summer, with a number of players potentially leaving.
There are doubts about the future of N’Golo Cante and Giorgino, who have only one year left on their contracts.
Kante has started just 45 of his possible 76 Premier League appearances in the last two seasons, and Tuchel said last month that it was a “miracle” that his team finished third after missing the French national team for so much of the campaign.
Kante is the only naturally winning midfielder on the Chelsea team and given his endurance problems, it is no surprise that the Blues want to strengthen in this area.
Ten Hag aims to improve the midfield
Like Chelsea, Manchester United are also expected to be active in the transfer market this summer, as Eric ten Haag wants to improve the lineup he inherited after arriving from Ajax.
Ralph Rangnik, the interim manager who was replaced by Ten Hag, spoke several times during his stay at Old Trafford about the club’s need to reconsider the team that dropped to sixth in the Premier League and failed to win a trophy for the fifth consecutive season.
The midfielder is an obvious area that needs improvement, as Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic left United with free transfers this summer after their contracts expired.
Scott McTominey, Fred and Donnie van de Beek – who spent the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan at Everton – are the only central midfielders currently available at Ten Hague.
Sangare will be a player the manager knows well after spending the last two seasons together in the Eredivisie, while the midfielder claimed an assist, while PSV beat Ajax at Ten Hague in the final of the Dutch Cup this season.
