In Full Health initiative to advance health innovation

The In perfect health A learning and action community to advance health equity innovation the initiative seeks to improve equitable opportunities in health innovation investment, solution development and procurement.

The AMA partners with founders of collaborating organizations to support the In the Full Health Learning & Action Community with content, tools, resources and opportunities to connect, engage and learn with and from each other to advance equitable health innovation.

The In perfect health the initiative grew out of the AMA’s Organizational Strategic Plan for Embedding Racial Equity and Advancing Equity in Health Care, specifically related to the strategic approach “Ensuring Equitable Structures and Opportunities in Health Innovation.” The Center for Health Equity facilitated the development of the initial In perfect health principles with the AMA External Capital and Innovation Advisory Group.

The the initiative is built around five principles to promote equitable opportunities for health innovation, inviting community members to:

  1. Understand how structural racism, sexism, and bias affect the allocation of resources for healthcare innovation so that steps can be taken to eliminate them.
  2. Assess the value of all health innovation decisions by their impact on health equity as a primary metric.
  3. Invest in health innovations designed by innovators, building by and for historically marginalized communities.
  4. Use investment models for health innovation that support asset ownership and wealth development within historically marginalized communities.
  5. Engage industry influencers to address system-level barriers and needs.

Despite decades of growing investment in health innovation, data show that the US continues to have worse health outcomes than other high-income nations and persistent inequality.

The root of the problem is that Blacks, Hispanics, Indigenous Peoples, People of Color and Women make up approximately 70% of the US population, but are underrepresented in health care investment, development and purchasing decisions.
