KraussMaffei uses X-Rite color measurement technology in its innovative ColorAdjust solution presented at K 2022

Shown at K 2022, the ColorAdjust solution from KraussMaffei combines a machine control system with the built-in X-Rite ERX130 spectrophotometer to ensure accurate, reproducible and consistent color during mixing.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI, October 10, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — X-Rite Incorporated and Pantone LLC, global leaders in color science and technology, announced that KraussMaffei, a leading supplier of machinery and systems for plastics manufacturing and processing, is using the X-Rite ERX130 embedded spectrophotometer as part from its ColorAdjust solution. By combining embedded spectral measurement with machine control systems, the ColorAdjust solution provides mix manufacturers with accurate and repeatable color production during mixing for a more efficient and sustainable production process. The decision will be presented at K 2022, October 19-26in Düsseldorf at the KraussMaffei stand C 24 to D 24 in hall 15.

The KraussMaffei ColorAdjust system is designed for non-contact color variation monitoring and can directly adjust the exact color setting to compensate for minor manufacturing deviations. This gives the combined processors high reproducibility, even when processing input materials with a different color spectrum. In addition, the system helps to quickly achieve an accurate color when restarting the mixing process after stopping or in case of a color change. This reduces the amount of initial scrap and rejected materials when restarting the mixing process, creating a more sustainable workflow that saves raw materials.

The ColorAdjust system uses the X-Rite ERX130 non-contact embedded reflectance spectrophotometer to capture the spectral data of the cooled, regenerated pellets in the vibrating chute and transmits the results directly to the machine control system. The color data is used to automatically control the color measurement units, which are equipped with four or six colors to cover the entire color spectrum. The system can then automatically adjust the exact color setting without operator intervention.

“Spectral measurement from X-Rite fulfills our task with the highest precision by taking non-contact measurements from the cooled regranulates on the vibrating chute and sending the results to the machine control system,” explains Lars Darnede, Process Engineering, KraussMaffei. “This in turn controls the second module, the color measurement module, which is equipped with at least four colors and four measurement modules.”

“We are excited to work with KraussMaffei, which designs manufacturing solutions with sustainability in mind,” said Michael Sager, general manager, embedded measurement solutions, X-Rite. “Color monitoring during the production process makes it easier for companies to use recycled or bio-sourced raw materials and maintain color consistency. The system can identify color deviation and make changes before the lot is ruined, avoiding costly line errors and rework.”
