LA Care Community Resource Centers and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plans Give Out Free Backpacks and School Supplies in July and August | California Blue Shield

LOS ANGELES (July 8, 2022) – LA Care Health Plans and Blue Shield of California Promise announced today that they will distribute up to 33,000 free backpacks filled with school supplies to Los Angeles County students from kindergarten through college through July and August. This is the third year in a row that the two health plans have held this series of backpacking events.

Back-to-school gift-giving events come as rising inflation puts more financial strain on families. The events are open to the public and will be held at locations throughout Los Angeles County, including community resource centers operated jointly by the health plans, from July 9 through August 13, 2022. Six of the 11 events will also feature free tote bags , filled with groceries.

According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, seven in 10 Americans consider inflation the biggest problem facing the country, and the current price of many consumer goods has increased at the fastest annual rate in four decades.

LA Care and Blue Shield Promise recognize that this is a particularly difficult time for low-income communities, and the back-to-school events are the latest example of how health plans’ community resource centers are addressing social determinants of health, such as safety of income.

“With more and more families feeling the pinch of inflation everywhere from the supermarket to the gas station, we’re happy to ease some of the costs associated with preparing for the new school year,” said John Baacks, CEO of LA Care. “Families should focus on school readiness, not what supplies they can save to make ends meet.”

To best serve large numbers of attendees, eight of the 11 events will be held in venues that can accommodate both drive-in and walk-in formats. Three events will be held at Community Resource Centers in Inglewood, Norwalk and Metro LA (Koreatown).

“We want to bring some peace of mind to families affected by rising costs due to inflation and provide students throughout Los Angeles County with backpacks, food and other necessary school supplies to ensure a successful school year,” said James Kruse, MD and Chief Medical Officer of Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan. “Through these back-to-school events, everyone can also learn about the vital resources available at our Community Resource Centers to help them live healthy lives.”

LA Care and Blue Shield Promise Community Resource Centers offer a range of free classes, programs and services designed to improve the health and well-being of their members and surrounding communities, which includes addressing social needs. To learn more about community resource centers, visit
