Major League Soccer and EA SPORTS unveil eMLS 2023 season

Major League Soccer (MLS) and Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA) today unveiled eMLS 2023 as the league continues to grow in popularity and captivate soccer and gaming fans across North America. The eMLS 2023 season schedule will feature world-class events EA SPORTS™ FIFA 23 players, compelling competition and engaging MLS content enhancing the cultural connection between eSports and soccer. First highlighted by two landmark League Series events in New York in January and February, the season culminates in the eMLS Cup on March 12 in Austin during SXSW. In 2023, Inter Miami CF will be represented on the virtual pitch by Stefan Borrello, the second eMLS athlete in the club’s history. Borrello will compete under the gamertag IMCF_Donborrello.

Inter Miami will enter their third competitive season in the eMLS. In the 2021 season, the club reached the semi-finals of the Last Chance Qualifier for the eMLS Cup. This year, Inter Miami qualified for the club’s first broadcast event, League Series 2, and made the club’s first appearance in the eMLS Cup playoffs, winning their first match before facing elimination in the quarterfinals. ​In 2023, players will compete for the largest total season prize pool in eMLS history – $100,000. Each League Series broadcast will feature more than 10 players and features a new competition format that provides enhanced coverage for fans .

The away qualifiers and group stages of each league series will be featured on each MLS club or player’s respective Twitch and YouTube channel, and fans can watch the main group matches at twitch.tv/mls. The season format will be as follows:

  • eMLS League Serie 1: The 2023 season starts on 24-25 January with away qualifiers with the group stage on 28 January and the final series matches on 29 January.
  • eMLS League Series 2: The season continues on February 7-8 with away qualifiers, the group stage on February 11 and the final series matches on February 12.
  • eMLS Cup: The season will conclude in Austin at SXSW, with the Last Chance Qualifier taking place on March 11 and determining the final entrant spot (#12 in the standings) for the eMLS Cup on March 12.

Kacey “Kacee” Anderson, the first female content creator to sign with an eMLS club, will be the official correspondent for this year’s eMLS season. She will be joined by eMLS anchor Faizal Khamisa, play-by-play announcer Mike LaBelle, commentator Dan Gaskin and sideline reporter Suzanne Collins.

eMLS has fostered a culture of winning both on and off the field since 2018, and the League continues to report year-over-year increases in viewership and digital engagement. The 2023 season features a roster of notable partners including Coca-Cola® Zero Sugar, PlayStation®, DoorDash and JLab, along with AVANT.

The 2022 eMLS champion, Paulo Neto of Atlanta United, returns this year to defend the title. The top two players in the eMLS Cup receive direct bids to the EA SPORTS FIFA 23 Global Series Playoffs. Third and fourth place will get a chance to compete in EA SPORTS FIFA 23 Global Series Playoffs Playoffs that effectively put these four players in prime position to compete in the FIFAe World Cup.
