Mental health, access among the main health problems of patients

A new study finds that patients seek support for social determinants of health in managing their overall health

BOSTON, October 25, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — A new survey of more than 2,000 patients by leading digital therapy company Medisafe shows that getting support for mental illness is the biggest challenge among almost all patient segments. The survey aimed to gather data on what health issues continue to dominate patients’ lives in a digitally engaged healthcare environment. Fifty-one percent of patients listed mental health support as their primary need.

In addition to mental health support, patients noted a variety of other concerns. Thirty-nine percent say lack of time and motivation is the main concern in managing their health. Additional survey results found that nearly 300 patients said clinical support and medication guidance were essential to staying consistent with their medications.

“These study results demonstrate the complex issues of today’s patients and point to the need for holistic care and guidance to maintain better physical and mental health,” said Omri Short, CEO and co-founder of Medisafe. “New digital tools can play an important role in addressing both mental and physical health, while connecting patients to the care they need and helping patients achieve better outcomes with their medication journey.” In addition, this study concludes that the age of “one-size-fits-all” medicine is over. The survey also found that elements of healthcare equity were among the top concerns for patients across age groups. Patients aged 25-34 say access to support services such as financial support and transportation is most needed; while patients aged 35-44 say lifestyle items such as nutrition counseling and childcare are their most pressing need. Patients over 55 say their health has a negative impact on their work and retirement plans more than mental health concerns.

The survey results also identified health concerns related to race/ethnicity as well as socioeconomics. Social support (such as family engagement, chat services, etc.) is the biggest concern for the black community, while access to support services is the biggest challenge for the Latino community. Patients from the Middle East identified affordability as their main concern for maintaining good health compared to all other groups who identified mental health as their main concern.

Socio-economic status influenced patient needs, and survey results found that rising inflation and costs created concerns for patients. Lower-income patients say access to support services is their biggest barrier to improving health. As a result, they want more guidance (via health coaching) to support their health and medication journey. People with higher incomes report better control over their health, but still struggle with mental health problems.
