Ann Arbor, Michigan, June 20, 2022 / PRNewswire / – Michigan Innovation Headquarters (MI-HQ) – a leader in the development of innovative workspaces in the field of life sciences and technology – has signed an agreement to purchase University of Eastern Michigan former headquarters of the College of Business, the Gary Owens Building, downtown Ypsilants. MI-HQ plans to completely renovate the 130,000-square-foot building to provide functional space for entrepreneurs and scientists, while supporting the growth of Ypsilants. The space is expected to open in the first quarter of 2023 and will provide 300 new jobs to the city.

“These added innovators will bring additional pedestrian traffic to the city center and businesses that are recovering from the lack of pedestrian traffic during COVID,” they said. Mark Smith, President of MI-HQ. “With the abundant housing stock near the building, there is a great opportunity for workers to find and walk or bike to work.”

The building will be on Ypsilanti’s tax records for the first time, which will provide significant additional revenue for the city. Ann Arbor SPARK estimates that space will provide more $ 1.1 million of net benefits for Ypsilanti town over a 10-year period.

“The building is in an area of opportunity that provides tax benefits to companies and the investors who invest in them,” Smith said. “We hope to be a catalyst for the region and stimulate investment, development and growth. By providing important infrastructure, oversight, investment and collaboration, MI-HQ saw the benefits of the community model in action. “

The acquisition of the building was a collaboration between Ann Arbor SPARK, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti town, Wax Countyand the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).

MI-HQ will renovate the space into an attractive, modern workspace to include the following features:

  • Free on-site parking
  • Wet research and development laboratories
  • Medical offices
  • 160-seat auditorium, accessible to both tenants and the public

  • Outdoor multifunctional yard for events and public gatherings

This is the fourth location of MI-HQ and is one of three acquisitions planned for 2022 and 2023. The new building is located at 300 W. Michigan Ave., which is a central point for tenants, offering easy opportunities for airport and bus transport, as well as numerous local dining options.

“MI-HQ prefers to redirect existing structures. “Revitalizing empty or orphaned buildings often has a positive impact on the area where they are located,” Smith said. “MI-HQ continues to expand and create a hard-to-reach ‘sticky infrastructure’ to attract and retain STEM teams in the region. The expansion in Ypsilants provides a cost-effective space for the continued growth of existing MI-HQ companies, as well as opportunities for new members to join the MI-HQ community. “

MI-HQ is accepting new applications for tenants in preparation for the opening date in 2023. Half of the new building is already being talked about as a core business.
