NBC’s US Open final coverage reached a peak of 9.2 million viewers as Matthew Fitzpatrick escaped Fairway Bunker and Parred 18you Hole to secure the first big win

USA Network published the best afternoon viewership of 2017 with coverage in the second round

STAMFORD, United States – June 21, 2022 – NBC Sports’ performance for the final round of the US Open 2022 from The Country Club in Brooklyn, Massachusetts, on Sunday reached an average total audience (TAD) of 5.41 million viewers – marking of the most watched final round of the East Coast US Open since 2013 and 65% more than the previous US Open, based on the East Coast (3.3 million, Winged Foot, 20.9.2020). The last round on Sunday was also the most watched sporting event of the weekend.

Sunday’s final round – which limited the championship to more than 45 hours of live broadcast on NBC, Peacock and USA Network – was highlighted by Matthew Fitzpatrick, Will Zalaris and Scotty Scheffler putting the chance of winning or a draw at 18you hole. Fitzpatrick secured his first major two-stroke victory after escaping a fairway bunker with his second shot.

Additional highlights for viewers from the coverage of the US Open 2022 on NBC Sports:

    • The ratings of the last round on Sunday reached their peak 9.2 million viewers from 18:30 to 18:45 ET on NBC, while Fitzpatrick, Zalatoris and Scheffler played the last holes. Peak ratings are the highest for the US Open, played in the East since 2016.
    • Led by Peacock, US Open 2022 is the best-selling golf event in NBC Sports history, a total of 244 million minutes * for all four rounds, which is more than 74% compared to last year’s US Open. The last round on Sunday provided an average audience (AMA) of 148,000 spectators, nearly four times as many than in 2021 (Tori Pines) and 2020 (Winged Leg). (* Figures do not include USGA digital platforms.)
    • Saturday’s coverage of the third round (noon – 20:03 ET) provided a TAD of 3.6 million viewers on NBC and Peacock – an increase of 16% over the same round for the previous East Coast US Open (3.1 million, Winged Leg, 19.09.20).
    • With a live broadcast from the US Open for the first time, USA Network provided a TAD of 1.08 million viewers to cover the second round on Friday – noting the best viewership of the network on a weekday afternoon since 2017 (December 26, 2017), except holidays. Thursday’s live broadcast of the first round of the USA Network averaged 854,000 viewers, the most watched weekday afternoon online since the Beijing Olympics (before surpassing Friday’s coverage).
    • TV viewership and the rating of households for Sunday’s NBC show (noon – 18:52 ET) alone was 5.3 million viewers and a rating of 2.9 / 12. 12 titles is the best for the final round since 2013 (13 titles).
    • Post-final round Live from GOLF Channel’s coverage averaged 176,000 viewers on Sunday – 48% more than last year.

Overall audience performance is based on live and same-day Nielsen data and digital data from Adobe Analytics.

Note – The US Open, which is played on the West Coast, allows live broadcast in prime time.
