Nearly half of Americans believe that their health insurance will cover them if they get sick or injured during an international vacation – but it’s not that simple

More than a quarter (28%) of Americans fell ill or injured while on vacation, whether at home or abroad, according to a ValuePenguin study. This percentage rises to 42% among Generation Z.

The most common causes cited are bacterial or nutritional diseases – such as food poisoning, parasites and diarrhea – which account for one third of common medical problems.

This set of diseases is followed by respiratory infections other than COVID-19 – such as colds, flu, bronchitis, strep throat and sinus infections – and bodily injuries such as sprains, falls or broken bones. Another 12% say they are infected with COVID-19.

56% of those who got sick or injured during a vacation have needed medical attention

Among those who fell ill or injured during the trip, 56% said they sought medical services at their destination or home when the trip was over. (A higher percentage of women – 61% – need treatment compared to men – 51%.)

More than 4 in every 10 (41%) have sought help with a doctor or an emergency at the rest site. For almost three quarters (72%) of these people, the medical treatment provided at their destination was covered by their existing health insurance. For the other 15% treated in their holiday area, the travel insurance purchased for the trip covers the costs.

The unfortunate 13% of travelers treated at their holiday place say that the insurance does not cover their treatment.

The other 15% who sought care did so at home when their trip was over. Among this group, the highest percentage – 37% – say their problem was not urgent. And 11% say they are not sure if their health insurance will start at their place of rest. Are you injured or sick during the holidays? 30% had to change their plans. Of those who fell ill or injured during the holidays, 78% were in a destination in the United States, while the rest were in a foreign country or fell ill more than once, both abroad and in the United States.

A large proportion of holidaymakers – 30% – who fall ill or injured during the holidays have had to change their plans to leave either by returning early or extending their stay, probably to seek care or wait.

This is a schedule for changing the duration of trips

If you become ill or injured while traveling, seek help first, including calling the emergency services if necessary. If you are traveling abroad, Johns Hopkins Medicine offers to contact the nearest US embassy or consulate for a list of local doctors or emergency clinics.

In case you get sick or injured while traveling, it is best to check your insurance coverage before you leave. Make sure you know the names – and generic brands – of your recipes. Write down your recipes as well as any existing conditions you have. Bring any medical coverage cards or travel insurance contracts.

Against the background of the pandemic, it may also be prudent to provide funds to cover the duration of any quarantine required for COVID-19. You may also want to find a way to secure food and long-term accommodation if you test positive.

As for when you are already on your trip, get another passenger to contact the host of each accommodation to make new arrangements if necessary.
