The report found that legislation would reduce inequalities in the US health care system
Today, Third Way released a new report outlining the many benefits of Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) And Congressman Ami Bera, MD (D-Calif.) Easy Enrollment in Health Care Act, legislation to simplify enrollment in American health care by allowing them to begin the process of enrolling in health insurance when they file their federal tax return. As noted in the report, which can be found here, the legislators’ bill will reduce inequalities in our health care system by “increasing social security contributions; improving health outcomes; reduction of medical debt; increase accessibility for non-English speakers; and increasing resources for underserved facilities. ”
The report emphasizes that health insurance is inaccessible and that people often think that registering for coverage is “unknown and difficult to navigate”. The report finds that the Easy Health Insurance Enrollment Act will provide an “effective model for applying automatic coverage” and notes that the legislation is already based on the success of Maryland’s Easy Enrollment Program. He concludes: “Finding and enrolling in health insurance can be confusing and difficult. Automatic coverage will remove this barrier for millions of uninsured people in America. “
“The idea behind this bill is simple but powerful: millions of Americans who are already eligible for free or very cheap health care do not receive it because of the barriers they face when enrolling. As this report shows, closing this gap and attracting more people to plans for which they are already eligible is key to providing better care for families and our communities. This bill is based on the success we saw in Maryland and would help expand its success both in our state and across the country. I will look for every opportunity to pass on this common sense proposal to ensure that more Americans have access to quality health care. ” said Senator Van Hollen.
“As a doctor, I know first hand that health care is extremely personal and often very stressful for families to find their way around.” said Representative Ami Bera, Ph.D. “That’s why it’s so important for Congress to take action to reduce burdensome bureaucracy to make it easier for Americans to register for health insurance. IN Law on Easy Enrollment in Healthcare will help millions of uninsured Americans automatically enroll in affordable health insurance at the same time they file their federal tax returns. Congress must pass this health legislation for the American people. “
“Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, millions of Americans have gained access to affordable health care, but there are still gaps that prevent some of the most vulnerable communities. Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman Amy Bera’s bill, the Easy Healthcare Enrollment Bill, makes coverage automatic for millions of people who find insurance confusing or impossible. This would improve health equity by raising insurance rates among colored people, improving health outcomes, reducing medical debt and increasing resources for the care of underserved patients. said Ladan Ahmadi, deputy director of economic communications and health policy at Third Way.
