Next Generation GaN Electronic Mobility Technology; KYOCERA AVX Salzburg and VisIC Technologies expand their cooperation

NESS Zion, Israel and SALZBURG, Austria, October 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Combining KYOCERA AVX’s leadership in discrete and modular packaging together with VisIC’s expertise in GaN power devices to offer cutting-edge products including the most efficient power module for leading EV OEMs and Tier 1 traction inverters.

VisIC Technologies, a world leader in gallium nitride (GaN) solutions for high-voltage automotive applications, and KYOCERA AVX Salzburg, Kyocera-AVX Salzburg, a leading international manufacturer and supplier of advanced electronic components for the automotive industry with production sites in North America, China and Europe, announce the expansion of their cooperation. The partners combine their strengths in packaging, assembly and GaN wafer technologies to provide high-current components for high-voltage applications such as charging and electronic propulsion.

The expansion of the collaboration aims to meet the automotive industry’s demands for reliable and highly efficient power solutions that will save costs for EVs. With superior thermal resistance, discrete GaN devices and half-bridge modules will be essential for future on-board chargers (OBCs) and traction inverters, thus optimizing weight, size, cost and operating range.

Based on VisIC 2n.d generation, lowest RDS (of) D3GaN (Direct Drive D-Mode) switches, the power module that will provide revolutionary power density and performance, has already been adopted for the next generation inverter model of basic 1St automaker level.

In addition to these collaborative developments, the companies have also achieved a high-voltage battery shutdown approach based on GaN power switches through effective collaboration in a very short period of time. With the fastest switching times, current and therefore thermal stress on the battery and the circuit board can be limited. This design will be available for flagship projects this year.

“The electrification of the automotive industry is generating significant demand for power components, which we predict will continue to grow strongly over the next decade,” said Ran Clear, senior vice president of sales and marketing at VisIC Technologies. “Together with KYOCERA AVX Salzburg, we will provide packaged discrete GaN devices and die-based power modules for mainstream EV OEM and Tier 1 designs.”

D. of VisIC3GaN technology was developed for the automotive industry’s high reliability and lowest loss standards. It also simplifies the system solution and enables highly efficient and affordable propulsion platform solutions. These benefits have been well received by the premium automotive customers that VisIC Technologies has worked with over the past few years.

“Gallium nitride semiconductors are the key to efficiency improvements and increased range in electrified vehicles. This technology offers significantly better switching speed and smaller and lighter package sizes, thus reducing overall system costs,” says Martin Knosp, Product Line Director at KYOCERA AVX Salzburg. “We are pleased to expand our collaboration with VisIC Technologies, leveraging our advanced design and manufacturing capabilities to create more GaN products and devices to better serve the burgeoning demands of the EV market.”
