Alfa Romeo have a distinct balance and finesse characteristic of their Italian roots. Trust the people of Italy to bring style and, boy, do they deliver. Alfa 4C is a visual marvel, eye-catching design, presenting Italian ingenuity.
4C was Alfa’s ticket to motoring in the twenty-first century. It was one of the cars that brought Alfa back to the map and fans of the brand had reason to rejoice. Alfa Romeo’s rather timid appeal in the United States has been undermined by this small package of excellence.
After Alfa stopped this fun little sports car, demand increased. One of the reasons for the rather sad demise of 4C was the lack of interest. Of course, the car was fun and everything else, but it was an expensive kit. The 2015 Alfa 4C had a list price of $ 64,000, and by checking a few boxes, you could easily move that figure to the mid-seventies.
Everyone must have forgotten about the car. So why this discussion? We think 4C can potentially be a great investment. The chances of Alfa reintroducing the 4C running on petrol are slim. In addition, the car is quite rare – only 2100 or so have reached the United States. But more importantly, the values seem quite tempting, at least for Italian exotics with a medium engine. 4C was what Alfa Romeos really were – fun, exotic and light. The Alfa 4C included a carbon fiber bathtub with aluminum subframes at the front and rear. Its own weight was 2465 pounds (in the wet), which is almost nothing for a modern sports car. Power came from an all-aluminum 1.75-liter four-row turbocharger that produced 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The duties of the transmission were performed by means of a 6-speed automatic with a double dry clutch.
With a power / weight ratio of 0.26 hp / kg (8.22 lb / hp), the 4C can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Along with all its electronic gadgets, the Alfa 4C offered a sensational driving experience. Its closest competitors did offer a similar feeling, but Alfa’s lack of magic was obvious. Unlike the Alfas of the past, the 4C came with working electronics. Although they were not the best by industry standards, they were excellent for Alfa. In case you didn’t know, Alfa Romeo from the past was tormented by unstable reliability.
Although the brand has seen better days after owning Ferrari, Alfa has definitely started to regain its former glory. Perhaps not as influential as before, Alfa Romeo is trying hard to change its destiny. The Giulia is a pretty sleek machine, the Stelvio is a fun little crossover, and the Tonale is all that the Stelvio is, only smaller.
Let’s take a closer look at the depreciation and market value of 4C
In terms of maintaining its value, Alfa Romeos have never been the best. Relatively, however, 4C was much better. Brand new 4C depreciated by about 10% after one year, an average of $ 7,000 per year. The used car market for the 4C is largely divided between the Standard and Launch Editions, with the exception of body styles. The average price for a used Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe is around $ 52,000, while the Spider sells a little higher, at $ 66,000. This is based on market research conducted through factoring years of the model until 2020. Interestingly, many dealers have earlier models years listed for sale. If you browse the internet well enough, a potential bargain awaits you.
According to this study by Fourwheel Trader, entering a used Alfa Romeo 4C from 2015 or 2016 between $ 35,000 and $ 42,000 means ideal. However, these are pre-pandemic levels. Expect a decent premium on today’s market (discussed in the next section).
Earlier model years almost leveled off in terms of depreciation, and some even began to rise slightly. In a study consisting of later models, the prices of almost identical mileage 2020 4Cs compared to 2019 4Cs from the corresponding listing time increased by 6000 dollars. This means that there is strong market demand, especially after the model stopped production in 2020.
How about the current market situation of Alfa 4C?
First, there aren’t many 4Cs listed for sale. The bonuses they want are primarily due to a lack of supply. Cargurus has examples with an average price of $ 54,000 or so. Of these ads, Spiders have a significant premium over the Coupe. Plus, later years models are usually expensive; 2015 or earlier are relatively cheap.
The cheapest list is the 2015 Alfa 4C Coupe, available for $ 49,000 with about 30,000 miles per watch. However, this seems a bit overrated, given the current situation on the second-hand market. Also, whether it is a bargain or not depends on how you will close the deal. If you can negotiate a 10-12% discount on the list price, then this should be a fair purchase. Keep in mind that not long ago, the 2015 4C was sold for $ 43,000 with only 7,000 miles per watch.
