Notre Dame is once again having a quarterback battle that needs to be fought and, as always, how it ends will have a significant impact on the Fighting Irish football team. Notre Dame has potential and opportunities, but there are also important questions that need to be answered.
We begin our review of 2022 positions with a look at quarterbacks who could hold the ultimate key to Notre Dame’s success this season.
GRAPHERBACK DEPTH GRAPHICS 2022
None of the returning quarterbacks have much experience. Second grader Tyler Buchner he played a niche role as a runner last season and a junior on Drew Pine the experience came in two games against Wisconsin and Cincinnati.
Both have a lot to prove, and the lack of experience is combined with the history of Buchner’s injuries and Pine’s rough spring to raise serious concerns about the position. When there are questions about the quarterback’s position, there will be questions about the infringement, and the infringement questions are a big reason for any doubts that experts and national analysts have about the Irish.
EXCLUDING BUCHNER MEANS BIG THINGS FOR NOTRE DAM
I’m a big fan of Pine, but there’s no doubt that Notre Dame’s greatest potential as a crime comes with Buchner as a quarterback. In terms of pure talent, Buchner compares Phil Yurkovets, Everett Golson, DeShone Kizer and Malik Zaire in terms of being the most physically gifted quarterback for the Irish in the last decade.
Buchner has already shown that he is a weapon in the running game, gaining 336 yards (7.3 YPC) and six touchdowns in just 46 curries last season. This is the same young man who rushed 1610 yards and 28 touchdowns as a teenager. He has shown that he is a legal weapon in designed runs, but as a training player Buchner has also shown that he can use his special athletic skills to play with his feet when passes pass.
If Buchner wins the job, I have no doubt he will make many remarkable reel games with his feet, but if he leads an Notre Dame attack capable of making a championship run, he will have to make a big leap this season with his hand. .
He missed his senior season due to the limitations of Covid-19 in California, his tinkering with his throwing movement, and his role as a true freshman cast doubt on his passing skills. But Buchner has a talent as a passer, which he showed as a teenager when he crossed for 4474 yards and 53 touchdowns.
Buchner has the talent for hand, intellect and sense of the game needed to be an influential player in the passing game, I have no doubt. Consistency in terms of decision-making and in terms of accuracy are the key to Buchner’s leap this season.
If the decisions are made consistently, Buchner will win the titular job, and beyond that he will be an immediate factor in the change of the Irish.
PYNE MUST BOUND
Pine lacks Buchner’s God-given physical instruments, but what he lacks in these areas he makes up for with others. Pine is a very smart quarterback with first-class leadership traits. Players gather around him, this was obvious every time he was on the field in 2021, and this is something you constantly hear from his teammates.
Pine stepped off the bench with Notre Dame’s victory over Wisconsin, and after being fired and involved in his second series, the Connecticut native showed his filth when he teamed up to lead Notre Dame to a touchdown in the fourth quarter and a shot from fields to withstand the late defeat. He entered the game in Cincinnati a week later with a 17-0 defeat to the Irish, but the cool-headed young signalman called, played with his hand and fed a pair of touchdown discs that cut Bearcat’s lead before the Irish were late.
Pine’s courage and audacity made him a fan favorite, and these traits draw him to this fall race.
It would be difficult for Pyne to beat Buchner, and the tough spring ended with a brutal spring performance. This put him even further behind Buchner and he will need a strong summer and a hot start in the autumn camp to really fight for the starting role.
But Pine will influence this football team, whether it starts or not. His leadership makes the unit better, whether it starts or not, and at some point his number will be called for one reason or another, and Pine must be ready for that moment.
ANGELS SHOW PROMISE … AND DEVELOPMENT
Scroll to Continue
freshman Steve Angeli was one of my lowest-ranked rookies in class 2022, and although he was obviously a smart quarterback with decent tools, he wasn’t overly experienced or productive in high school, barely exceeding 2,000 yards in his career.
But the young caller impressed me in the spring and he will have a chance to make my ranking for him look bad at some point. He is a confident young quarterback with a good frame and the strength of his arms continues to improve. Angeli is still struggling with the placement of the ball, but showed good time and decision-making as a true freshman.
What we saw from Angeli in the game Blue-Gold is that despite his complete lack of experience, the New Jersey native has ice running in his veins. Angeli was calm and balanced as he led the Gold team in a winning game.
I’m not sure 2022 will be the year, but Angeli will make her presence felt at some point in her career in Notre Dame.
THE THREE BIGGEST QUESTIONS IN THE QUARTERBACK
There are three key questions to be answered by the quarterback for Notre Dame in 2022.
1. Can Buchner stay healthy – Buchner not only suffered an injury at the end of the high school season (2018) and overcame several unpleasant injuries during his career in South Bend, but his style of play also raised understandable concerns about his ability to pass throughout the season.
2. Is Buchner ready to cope with the pressure? – If Buchner stays healthy and wins the job, he will enter the season with the talent to be an influential player. Then the question arises whether he is ready to cope with the pressure to be the titular quarterback. Can he handle a tough road environment like Columbus, Ohio, and can he step up in the spotlight against teams like Clemson and USC?
3. Can Pyne go back – Pine’s spring fights are worrying and he will have to overcome them in the autumn camp and return to the sensible, confident player who can divide the defenses.
