The Coursera 2022 Global Skills Report reveals a decline in US data technology and science skills –

Students show a growing emphasis on human skills such as decision-making and planning against the background of economic instability

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Accelerating digital transformation, inflation and global instability are leading to increased demand for digital and human skills needed to thrive in the new economy, according to the latest Coursera Global Skills report. The report shows that US skills in data technology and science are declining and lagging behind countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Europe and the Middle East. However, US learners demonstrated higher skills in basic business skills, including marketing, leadership and management, and strategy and operations.

“The big resignation and automation call for stronger investment in human capital, as institutions must prioritize the development of the highly sought-after digital and human skills needed to build a competitive and equitable workforce,” said Jeff Magionkalda, CEO of Coursera. “Our data show that these skills are not evenly distributed and low-wage students and workers need access to flexible, accessible and fast roads to entry-level digital jobs that provide a basis for a stronger and more inclusive economy. .

The Global Skills Report draws data from 100 million students in more than 100 countries who have used Coursera to develop a new skill in the last year. The report looks at three of the most sought-after areas of skills that boost employment in the digital economy – business, technology and data science. For the first time, this year’s report also highlights changes in the ranking for each country and country-specific data for the United States and India, where regional differences are noticeable.

The main insights for the United States from the report include:

  • The United States remains 29th overall in terms of overall skills, lagging behind Asia and Europe. Business proficiency has increased in the United States, with key areas such as leadership and management increasing from 40% in 2021 to 67% in 2022. However, overall technological proficiency has declined significantly from 69% in 2021. 43% this year. Proficiency in data science also fell sharply from 73% last year to 54% in 2022.
  • Students in the United States in the Northeast, Upper Midwest, and Pacific Coast had the highest business skills, while those in the South lagged behind. Three states in the Midwest, including Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, have the highest business skills in the United States.
  • Idaho showed the highest levels of technological skills in the country, ahead of technology centers such as California and Massachusetts. Students in the state also gained perfect 100% mobile development skills. This reflects the growth trend driven by the 61% increase in the number of high-tech companies in the country over the last decade.
  • US researchers are focusing on human skills amid rapid changes in the workforce. The workforce disruption caused by the pandemic and the pace of automation is forcing businesses to adapt quickly. Human skills such as sustainability, project management, decision making, planning, storytelling, and experimentation have become increasingly popular among U.S. business learners as organizations work to drive change.
  • The United States achieves greater gender equality in the overall enrollment, but women still lag behind men in STEM. Global trends in the report include:

  • Enrollment for entry-level or gateway courses for certificates among women reached 40% in 2021, a significant increase from 25% in 2019. Certificates, such as Google IT Support and Google Data Analytics, provide a clear path to acquiring the skills needed for highly sought-after, initial digital jobs. These courses require approximately 240 total study hours, which can be completed in just six months of 10 hours per week.
  • There is a strong correlation between skills, GDP and broadband. Richer countries have higher results in terms of general skills compared to those with high levels of Internet access.
  • In developed countries, more learners are acquiring human skills, including change management and resilience. Students in developing countries were more focused on digital skills through courses such as supply chain systems and mobile architecture.
  • The most popular business and technology skills worldwide in the last year have been leadership and management, probability and statistics, and theoretical computer science. For the second year in a row, Switzerland had the most qualified students, followed by Denmark, Indonesia and Belgium.
  • Students also focused on courses that develop the skills needed to understand the COVID-19 pandemic. Enrollment in courses covering epidemiology and risk management is now four times higher than before the pandemic.

With over 100 million students, 7,000+ institutions and more than 5,000 courses from 250 of the world’s leading universities and professors in the industry, Coursera has one of the largest datasets to identify and measure skills trends. In the Global Skills Report, more than 100 countries are ranked against each other, with the percentage ranking attributed to each skill. A country that shows 100% proficiency is ranked at the top of 100+ countries, and a country with 0% is at the bottom.
