Trinity Health Michigan joins
The American Cancer Society Check yourself out Initiative

National efforts are committed to the development of innovation
practices to increase screening and reduce cancer differences

Canton, Michigan (June 2, 2022) – Trinity Health Michigan announced that it is joining the American Cancer Society (ACS) to improve the frequency of lung cancer screening as part of the national Check yourself out initiative. This is the second year of the initiative and more than 150 institutions across the country are involved to manage quality improvement processes and interventions for cancer screening in an appropriate, safe and equitable way.

“Detecting and identifying lung cancer at an early stage can have a huge impact on a patient’s prognosis and allow us to intervene before the cancer spreads,” said Kumari Adams, MD, medical director of thoracic oncology at Trinity Health St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor. “Many patients delayed their cancer screening during the pandemic. We want to make sure they know it’s safe to be screened. Please check for lung cancer if you meet the requirements. That could save your life. “

While the world has been focusing on fighting COVID-19 for more than two years, cancer has not given up. Many Americans continue to delay preventive health measures, including cancer screening, leading to later diagnoses. In response, he created ACS Check yourself out Quality improvement projects to support health systems with quality improvement tools and evidence-based interventions to improve the screening rate.

“Our partnership with Trinity Health Michigan is critical to addressing significant gaps and delays in cancer screening,” said Dr. Katie Goss, regional vice president of Cancer Control at the American Cancer Society. “Ultimately, our goal is to save more lives by preventing cancer and detecting it earlier when it’s easier to treat.

Success for Check yourself out the initiative includes minimizing the effects of the pandemic on screening for breast, cervical, lung and colorectal cancers; tackling inequalities and reducing barriers to screening exacerbated by the pandemic; creating learning communities to encourage the sharing of best practices; and implementation of long-lasting, sustainable and meaningful processes.
