UPMC has identified the four most pressing health needs


In all regions UPMC serhowever, four significant health needs were identified:

  • Behavioral health

  • Chronic disease management

  • Access to care and navigation resources

  • Prevention and healthy living throughout the community

UPMC in partnership with experts from University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health to conduct CHNA. They combineed public health data analysis, Review of socio-economic factors, and a structured community input survey process that solicited feedback from almost 3000 community stakeholders, inclusive individualwith and organizations that represent patient groups like insufficient medical care, low incomes, and minority population.

“IIt is important that we all continue to work together to ensure that efforts and resources to improve health are effective and tailored to the most pressing needs,– said Sevko.

Through this rigorous evaluation process, UPMC significant health needs identified, prioritized themaction plans established and identified resources to meet these needs. The 2022 reports build on previous assessments and implementation plans developed in 2013, 2016 and 2019.

With hospitals in Pennsylvania, New York and Western Maryland, UPMC took a regional hub approach to develop the 2022 CHNA—allowing local communities to set priorities while maintaining a coordinated community health strategy across the UPMC network. UPMC’s CHNA regions are:

For example, bbehavioral health was rated at the top two the most important health topics for each UPMC hospital, with COVID-19 having a significant impact on behavioral health settings in the community.

We’ll I keep pursueEng new, integrated models of care for both behavioral health and substance use disorder in this current cycleand tThese programs will continue to use technology and the ability to partner with physical health providers to reduce stigma. We will also strive to increase and improve access to care in our communities.”

Other key findings from this cycle of CHNA among all UPMC regions:

  • Aaccess to care was adopted as the problem UPMC can most likely address and make a significant impact.

  • ecommunity health disparities due to socioeconomic status and other non-medical factors were widespread recognized by the respondents.

To remain in compliance with IRS 501(r) guidelines, all licensed nonprofit hospitals in the country are required to conduct and publish a satisfactory CHNA as part of a three-year cycle process.
