The Buckeye Health Plan, an Ohio-based care company, is the third payer to partner with Walgreens Health to launch Walgreens Health Corner locations. With additional partners in California and New Jersey in patient populations with commercial and Medicare plans, Walgreens Health already has a contract to serve more than 2.27 million patients. By the end of 2022, the number of Walgreens health centers will expand from 55 to approximately 100, including an additional five in Ohio.
“Walgreens Health Corners is breaking down barriers and expanding access to much-needed health care, advice and services for our Medicaid members right in their neighborhoods,” said Buckeye Health Plan CEO Steve Province. “This collaboration opens the door to highly personalized, quality care provided by trusted local health professionals. It’s a major innovation that fits in perfectly with Buckeye’s vision of transforming community health, one person at a time. ”
Walgreens Health Corner locations will offer eligible Medicaid members in Ohio access to integrated health care led by health advisors who are pharmacists or registered nurses. Health counselors will provide a range of health and clinical services that complement the care received by physicians and primary care professionals. Patient care services and related outcomes will be shared with the Buckeye Health Plan and additional patient care providers in support of individualized, holistic care.
Services to be offered at Walgreens Health Corner locations range from preventative care and health checks to help with chronic management and include:
- Choose health exams, such as blood pressure tests, BMI assessments and HbA1c tests;
- Scheduling of mammography appointments;
- Providing test kits for colorectal cancer and urine screening for diabetes;
- Council of Health Advisers on General Health Issues;
- Answering questions about prescription and over-the-counter medicines;
- Assistance with technological needs – digital health applications and monitoring devices;
- Administration of health risk studies to collect important data to influence intervention efforts;
- Check information for members to share updates on health plans, providers and the Walgreens Healthcare team
The services will be available at no additional cost to eligible members of Buckeye’s health plan in northeastern Ohio.
“Healthcare is local in nature. Our collaboration with the Buckeye Health Plan will allow us to tailor our health services to the needs of Medicaid members and the communities we serve, ”said John Doe, interim president and chief financial officer of Walgreens Health. “These services are designed to reduce the gap between recommended best practice in patient care and the care actually provided, as well as to improve the management and coordination of care by accessing more accessible and convenient services where Buckeye members live. Health Plan. ”
The collaboration between Walgreens Health and the Buckeye Health Plan underscores the new vision of the Walgreens Boots Alliance to be a leading partner in rethinking local health and well-being for all.
This new collaboration follows a successful Walgreens Pharmacy pilot program launched with the Buckeye Health Plan in 2021 to support patients with asthma and COPD as part of a multi-phase approach to support comprehensive advanced clinical services. Through the pilot, Walgreens pharmacists advised patients on how to use their inhalers, provided proactive contact with non-adherent patients, and used predictive modeling to reach people at high risk of non-adherence. So far, more than 1,900 consultations with a pharmacist have been performed.
The Buckeye Health Plan was one of the first payers to reimburse pharmacists for these services in Ohio, made possible by recent changes in state legislation. It was the first expanded pilot project to manage asthma / COPD in partnership with a payer, which includes pediatric and adult patients managed by Medicaid, Medicare and the Health Exchange. The lessons learned from the pilot project will be applied to future disease management programs between Walgreens and Buckeye Health.
