Walmart uses innovative on-board technology to travel the extra mile for drivers

To most retailers, innovation in the supply chain may seem like building an airplane while flying it. Walmart recognizes that drivers – or in this case our private fleet drivers – are crucial to our success. That is why we are committed to improving their experience. Not only do we offer industry-leading benefits, compensations and development programs, but we’ve implemented two technology tools that work together to create a world-class driver experience and provide real-time visibility to our network’s day-to-day operations. from 12,000 drivers.

In collaboration with Platform Science, a leader in telematics infrastructure and transportation technology, each Walmart Private Fleet cab is now equipped with an intuitive, interactive tablet device that integrates fully with NTransit, a driver workflow application developed by product and technology teams. at Walmart. This personalized on-board computer system provides private fleet drivers with a world-class technology experience, real-time business visibility and our customers with what they want, where and when they want it.

How Walmart and Platform Science are industry leaders in supply chain innovation and automation

Walmart has a rich history of transformation. Our latest approach uses technology to transform the lives of drivers, eliminating friction and unlocking their potential. Using Platform Science’s telematics infrastructure solution to deploy our NTransit application, we provide drivers:

  • Better visibility: Knowing what we own and where we have it, in near real time, is our mission. Integration provides near real-time visibility of where our assets are in the fleet to ensure that cargo arrives on time and in the right place. Stores can predict the arrival time of cargo and effectively plan their days and work around truck deliveries. In addition, Walmart customers will benefit from this increased visibility and efficiency. They will see our shelves loaded in the store and will have access to a more accurate inventory of products available for purchase online.
  • Improved communication: Walmart has one of the largest private fleets in the country. Our on-board technology helps drivers communicate more closely with stores by integrating with store applications, ensuring a smoother delivery process. As the driver approaches a store, geolocation technology detects the driver’s location by sending push notifications to the employee’s portable storage, allowing them to schedule a quick unloading and turnaround. We can also implement secure audio messages directly with our drivers to ensure that they receive important information while on the ground.
  • Productivity and retention: By eliminating manual contact points, our goal is to create a friction-free workflow so that drivers can spend more time driving the truck and less time waiting at execution centers or in-store deliveries. Platform Science and NTransit integrate seamlessly to coordinate planning and navigation so drivers can take the road to their next destination without entering it. Like any job, unplanned activities sometimes require the driver to do more than drive the truck. Our new system creates accountability by allowing drivers to communicate what they have achieved on the road. In this way, they receive compensation for any kilometers and activities without driving beyond what was originally planned.

Use technology to go the extra mile

Our drivers give the green light to technology. A point of pride for the collaboration between Platform Science and Walmart is the significant increase in driver satisfaction, which reflects the best-in-class experience we want to provide. We plan to continue to improve and develop our on-board systems based on feedback from our drivers and in-store staff so that our supply chain staff can do their job with safety, courtesy and pride. Walmart will continue to invest in destructive technology to fly into today’s complex retail environment.
