Three Greater Lansing teams are still playing for state titles as another busy sports year in high school enters its final week.
The district has seven teams from the state championship this school year, with Lansing Christian Golf Boys and Lansing Catholic Boys vying for state titles this spring. There is a chance for two championships on the field, with the football for girls Haslet and Williamson still alive, and one for the diamond with the baseball of Pewamo-Westphalia.
Here’s what you need to know as all three try to end their seasons by doing school history and lifting trophies for state titles in Michigan on Saturday.
The hornets are on the doorstep again
The last state semifinal for girls’ football, Williamston, is the second in a row under coach Steve Horn. The Hornets were stopped by the country’s Detroit Day in last year’s Division 3 semifinals. 3 in the Pontiac Notre Dame Prep rankings at 8pm Wednesday at Parker Middle School in Howell.
The Hornets are trying to reach the state championship match for the first time since 2010. Williamson has two appearances in the title match in the history of the program – the other was in 2008 – and is aiming for his first championship.
With Wednesday’s victory, Williamson will continue to face 2nd-placed Hudsonville United Christian or 6th-placed Elk Rapids in Saturday’s title game at DeMartin Stadium in Michigan State.

Shooting from Vikings to add to the historical run
Haslett has never been to a state championship game and has a chance to continue his strong streak as he faces current state champion and No. 2 in the Bloomfield Hills Marian rankings in the Division 2 semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Northville.
The No. 7 Vikings in the rankings have not won a county title since 2014 before ending this drought this spring. And they came together with a deficit of four goals to bring out South Lyon East for their first regional championship. The regional final was the end point of several of the other top seasons in the history of the Haslett program, including 2002 and 2014.
If Haslet surpasses Marian, who is chasing a fifth consecutive state crown, he will face either 4th place in the Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central, or number 6th in the Richland Gull Lake rankings in Saturday’s game for the DeMartin Stadium title.

Pirates is expecting its first title game since 1991
Pevamo-Westphalia also had to come together to win that point, beating Lansing Catholic late to win the Division 3 quarter-finals on Saturday in Davenport. With this victory, the pirates are at this stage for the third time in the history of the program and the second time in four years.
PW reached the semifinals of the United States in 2019 and its series was terminated by eventual US champion Homer. The Pirates will try to reach a championship match for the second time in the history of the program when they face No. 16 Detroit Edison at 2:30 p.m. Friday at McLain Stadium in Michigan. PW also reached the state title game in 1991.
The Pirates’ run so far includes a victory over No. 3 in the Hemlock rankings. PW is the only unranked team among the final four in Division 3. The best ranked Buchanan and No. 5 Standish-Stirling are the other teams in the title dispute.
