where every current member of the league ranks according to Sports Illustrated

If the Power 5 conferences started from scratch tomorrow, how desirable would the Iowa Hawkeyes and the rest of the Big Ten league be? That’s exactly what Sports Illustrated decided to define in its desirability ratings.

To compile their full Power 5 desirability ratings, there were a set of five categories used to rank programs: football ranking, academic ranking, all-sports ranking, football attendance and broadcast viewership.

For the football rankings, SI used Sagarin’s five-year average grades for each Power 5 team from 2017-21. Academic rankings were listed according to the US News & World Report national university rankings.

The all-sport rankings were based on the 2021-22 Learfield Directors’ Cup Division I standings, which evaluate performance in 19 sports. Football attendance rankings are based on average home attendance (excluding the 2020 season) from 2017-21.

Finally, broadcast viewership is based on the total number of football games for each program that drew one million or more viewers from 2017-21. Again, this list excludes the 2020 season due to COVID-19, which skews the results.

From worst to first, here’s how each Big Ten school ranks in the SI desirability rankings based on those five categories among the current 69 Power 5 programs.
